Statement 1 – True
Rigid (concrete) pavements experience:
Warping stresses due to temperature gradient between the top and bottom of the slab, and
Frictional stresses due to the restraint offered by the subgrade/base against expansion or contraction of the slab caused by overall temperature changes.
Statement 2 False
In flexible pavements, wheel-load stresses are highest at the surface and decrease with depth. The top layers experience the maximum intensity of stresses; the bottom layers experience the least. (This is why higher-quality materials are used in the upper layers.)
