The white, powdery patches that appear on a new brick walls during the rainy season are a phenomenon known as

EFFLORESCENCE.

This is caused because of alkalies present in the bricks.

When bricks come in contact with moisture, water is absorbed and the alkali crystallize and the water then migrates to

the surface of brick wall through tiny pores via capillary action. As the water evaporates upon drying, the dissolved salts

are left behind and crystallize, Forming grey (or) white powder patches appear on the brick surface.
