Solution
The max water content at which further reduction in water content does not cause any reduction
in the volume is called shrinkage limit. It is the minimum water content at which soil is
saturated. Montmorillonite has large amount of water and other exchangeable ions can easily
enter between the layer causing the layers to be separated. So, it is expansive in nature.
