The Primary cause of immediate settlement in foundations is elastic
deformation of soil.
This type of settlement occurs immediately upon the application of
a load, particularly in non-cohesive (sandy/ granular) soils or dry/
unsaturated cohesive soils.
Caused by deformation of soil particles and their rearrangement
leading to a reduction in void space without any change in the water
content.
Predominant type of settlement in sandy soils.
It happens rapidly or instantaneously.
