A level surface is defined as a curved surface which is perpendicular to the direction of gravity (plumb line) at every

point on it. The surface of still water, such as in a pond or lake, naturally takes the shape of a level surface because

gravity acts uniformly perpendicular to it at all points. It is important to note that a level surface is not truly flat/plane

it is actually curved, following the shape of the earth (approximately spheroidal), but over small areas, it can be treated

as horizontal for practical purposes.

Horizontal surface: This is a plane surface tangential to the level surface at a given point — it is truly flat, unlike the

level surface which is curved.

Spheroidal surface: This refers to the overall shape of the Earth (an oblate spheroid), not specifically the water surface

of a small pond.

Curved surface: While technically true (a level surface is curved), this is too general a term; the specific and correct

surveying terminology for a still water surface is "level surface."
