Major Shaitan Singh, renowned as the 'Hero of Banasur', was born on September 1, 1924, in
the village of Banasur in the Phalodi district (formerly Jodhpur). He initially enlisted in the
Jodhpur State Forces. Following the merger of the Jodhpur princely state with India, he was
transferred to the Kumaon Regiment. On November 17, 1962, when China attacked the
Chushul post in the Ladakh region, the responsibility for defending the post rested with Major
Shaitan Singh's 'Charlie Company'. He was martyred while fighting there on November 18,
1962. Notably, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra.
'बाणासुर का शहीद' के नाम से विख्यात मेजर शैतान सिंह का जन्म 1 सितम्बर, 1924 को फलौदी जिले (पूर्व
जोधपुर) के बाणासुरगाँव में हुआ। वे जोधपुर राज्य सेना में भर्ती हुए। जोधपुर रियासत के भारत में विलय के बाद
उन्हें कुमाऊँ रेजिमेंट में स्थानान्तरित कर दिया गया। 17 नवम्बर, 1962 को जब चीन ने लद्दाख क्षेत्र की चुशूल
चौकी पर आक्रमण किया, उस समय इस चौकी की रक्षा की जिम्मेदारी मेजर शैतानसिंह की 'चारली कम्पनी' पर
थी। यहाँ लड़ते हुए 18 नवम्बर, 1962 को शहीद हो गये। ज्ञातव्य है कि इन्हें मरणोपरान्त परमवीर चक्र से
सम्मानित किया गया।
