Hammer
blow, variation of tractive effort, swaying couple
Effect
of partial balancing in locomotives :
1.
Hammer blow is the maximum vertical unbalanced force caused by the mass
provided to balance reciprocating masses.
2.
A variation of tractive force (effort) of an engine is caused by the unbalanced
portion of the primary force, which acts along the line of stroke.
3.
Swaying couple is unbalanced primary force along the lines of stroke are
separated by a distance apart and thus constitute a couple.
Hence, the correct option is (A).
&Key Points:-
Due
partial balancingof the reciprocating parts, there are unbalanced primary
forcesalong the line of stroke and perpendicular to the line of stroke.
These
forces produces :
1.
Variation in tractive force along the line of stroke
2.
Swaying couple
●Unbalanced
primary force perpendicular to the line of stroke also produces variation in
pressure on the rails, which results in hammering actionon the rails.
●The
maximum magnitude of the unbalanced force along the perpendicular to the line
of stroke is known as a hammer blow.
