Solution

Given: 
A cubical block ABCDEFGH and load on two opposite faces ADHE and BCGF = P.
As we know that when the compressive load (P) is applied on the faces ADHE and BCGF, the other two faces will be subjected to lateral tensile stress as shown in Fig. (a). Now in order to prevent the lateral strains in the other two directions, we have to apply a compressive load (P1) as shown in Fig (b).
