According to IS 800-2007, the overall depth of purlin should be: (where t is thickness of purlin [in mm] and L is length of purlin [in mm])
Greater than 50 t and less than L/45
Less than 50 t and greater than L/45
Less than 100 t and greater than L/45
Greater than 100 t and not less than L / 45
Greater than 100 t and not less than L / 45
As per the empirical design requirements for steel purlins:
Overall depth of purlin, D > 100t
Also,
D ≥ L/45
where: D = Overall depth of purlin
t = Thickness of purlin
L = Length or span of purlin
Therefore, the overall depth should be greater than 100t and not less than L/45.
