Assertion (A): In tensile test on a specimen, true stress in the specimen is more than the
nominal stress
Reason (R): Grip of universal testing machine introduces stress concentrations.
True Stress = Load / Actual Area
• Nominal Stress = Load / Original Area
• In a tensile test, the actual area decreases, so True Stress > Nominal Stress.
• UTM grips cause stress concentration, but this is not the reason for the difference.
• Therefore, both Assertion and Reason are correct, but Reason is not the correct
explanation of Assertion.
