Solution

To avoid buckling of compression flange, IS – 800 : 2007 specifies following web thickness requirements 

 (I)  when transverse stiffeners are not provided
 
(II)  When only transverse stiffeners are provided 
where, 
d = depth of the web 
tw = thickness of the web 

fyf = yield stress of the compression flange 

  c = clean distance between transverse stiffener.
