Question
By means of Boussinesq's stress distribution theory, which one of the following pressure distribution diagrams can be prepared?
A.
Strain isobar
B.
Vertical pressure distribution on a horizontal plane
C.
Vertical pressure distribution on an inclined plane
D.
Pressure distribution diagram on an oblique plane
Answer ( Option B)

Vertical pressure distribution on a horizontal plane

Solution

Based on Boussinesq's equation, the vertical stress distribution on a horizontal plane is located at a depth below the ground surface.

Note:

The following assumptions are made by Boussinesq in the derivation of his solution:
(i) The soil medium is elastic, homogeneous, isotropic and semi-infinite with the top surface horizontal.
(ii) The medium obeys Hooke's law.
(iii) The self-weight of the soil is not considered.
(iv) The soil is initially unstressed.
(v) The change in volume upon application of load is considered negligible.
(vi) The top surface is free of shear and is subjected only to the point load at the specified location.
(vii) Continuity of stress is considered to exist in the medium.
(viii) The stresses are distributed symmetrically with respect to the z-axis.
