Shear Centre

The shear centre is the point on the cross-section of a beam through which the resultant shear force must pass so that

the beam bends without twisting.

· The shear centre is also known as the centre of twist.

· For sections symmetric about both axes, the shear centre coincides with the centroid.

· For sections symmetric about one axis only, the shear centre lies on the axis of symmetry.

· When the external load passes through the shear centre, the beam undergoes pure bending only, and no twisting 
   (torsion) occurs.
