Question

Consider the following statements regarding a beam of uniform cross-section simply supported at its

ends and carrying a

concentrated load at one of its third points.

1. Its deflection under the load will be maximum.

2. The bending moment under the load will be maximum.

3. The deflection at the mid-point of the span will be maximum.

4. The slope at the nearer support will be maximum.

Of these statements.
A.
1 & 3 are correct
B.
2 & 4 are correct
C.
1 & 2 are correct
D.
3 & 4 are correct
Answer ( Option B)

2 & 4 are correct

Solution

· BM is maximum under the load

· Deflection will be maximum, where slope of elastic curve is zero.

· Deflection under the load will be maximum – false because for an unsymmetrically placed point load, the

point of maximum deflection does not occur under the load. It occurs at the point where the slope of the

  deflected beam becomes zero.

· Slope at the nearer support will be maximum – true since the load is closer to one support (say the

nearer support), that support carries a larger reaction force, and consequently experiences a steeper

slope of the deflected beam at that end compared to the farther support.
