The fundamental principles of survey are:
1. Working from the whole to part:
The main idea of working from whole to part is to prevent accumulation of errors and to localize the minor errors.
To achieve this in actual practice, a sufficient no. of control points are established with higher precision in and around the total area to be surveyed and after that minor control points in between these primary control points are established with less precise method.
2. Location of a point by measurement of two control points:
Let P and Q be two given control points, any other point say, R, can be established or located with reference to these points by using many methods such as Chain survey, Theodolite survey, Triangulation etc. Refer following figure:
