For smaller installations where lengths
are small and a number of joints is required, Vulcanized India Rubber (VIR)
cables are preferred over paper insulated cables because :
They are costlier
They are cheaper and more durable
They are less durable
They are bigger in size
They are cheaper and more durable
Vulcanised India Rubber (VIR) has
greater mechanical strength-durability and wear resistance property than pure
rubber. Its main drawback is that Sulphur reacts very quickly with copper and
for this reason, cable using VIR insulation have tinned copper conductor.
