Question
From limiting deflection point of view, use of high strength steel in RC beam results in
A.
reduction in depth
B.
no change in depth
C.
increase in depth
D.
increase in width
Answer ( Option C)

increase in depth

Solution

· From the serviceability (deflection) point of view, using high-strength steel (Fe 415/Fe 500)

increases the stress in reinforcement under service loads. This results in larger deflections.

· To satisfy the deflection limits prescribed by IS 456:2000, the beam must have a larger

   effective depth.

· Hence, from the limiting deflection point of view, the use of high-strength steel in an RC

beam results in an increase in depth.
