Solution

The brief step-by-step procedure for Gale's method is given below: 
1. The interior angles are corrected by using the condition that the sum of all the interior angles is 2N - 4; N being the Number of sides in traverse and bearings are also corrected for a local attraction. 
2. The bearings of all lines are calculated in the whole circle bearing system starting with the observed bearings of one line and after that, these bearings are reduced into the quadrantal system. 
3. Calculation of the consecutive coordinates i.e. latitudes and departures of each line. 
4. Calculation of algebraic sum of all latitudes and all departures. 
5. Apply necessary corrections to the latitudes and departures of the lines (only if either or both ∑L and ∑D ≠ 0).
6. The corrections may be applied either by transit rule or by compass rule depending upon the type of traverse. 
7. Using the corrected consecutive coordinates i.e. corrected latitudes and departures of each line, the independent coordinates to the points are calculated so that they are all positive, the whole of the traverse thus lying in the northeast quadrant.
