Solution

In case of short columns failure is by crushing.
Thus, crushing load Pc = FcA.
In case of long column failure is by buckling.
Thus, buckling load  PE = Generally columns which we came across are neither too short nor long.
The failure of member will be due to combined effect of direct and bending stresses.
For this Rankine devised an empirical formula for collapse load which should cover all column whether they are short or long.
