In balanced
load condition neutral current always zero, neutral wire is required when load
is star connected as well as unbalanced. Only unbalanced, resultant current
passing through the neutral wire which is very less as compare to other phase
or line current. So less current required, less size of conductor because size
of conductor directly depends on amount of current passing through it.
Ultimately, unbalanced resultant current at neutral point is small, hence small
(half) size of conductor is proper choice of installation of] distribution
network.
