Single - Grained structure : Single grained structure is the characteristic of coarse grained soils, with a particle size greater than 20. Gravitational forces predominate the surface forces and hence grain to grain contact results.
Honey - comb structure : This is for grains of silts smaller than 0.02 mm and larger than 0.002 mm i.e., 2 Due to relative smaller size of grains, the molecular forces at the contact area are large enough compared to the submerged weights. So the grains are prevented from rolling down immediately into the position of equilibrium during the process of settling. With that they form miniature arches, which bridge over relatively large void space. This results in the formation of honey comb structure.
Flocculated structure : This structure is characteristic of fine grained soils such as clays. Inter particle forces play a predominant role in the deposition. The particles oriented in flocculant structure will have edge to face contact.
Cohesive matrix : Composite soil in which clay particle are very large as compared to bulky, coarse grained particles. The clay forms a matrix in which bulky grains appear to be floating without touching one another.
