Free flooding :
- Ditches are excavated in field either on the contour or up and down the slope.
It is also called wild flooding, since no attempt is made to control the flow by means of levees etc. This method is suitable for close growing crops, pastures etc. Particularly where the land is steep. This method may be used on rolling land where borders, checks, basins and furrows are not suitable.
Border flooding :
- The field is divided into a number of bays or strips each bay is separated by raised earth borders.
- Each strip is of the order of 10 to 20 m in width and 100 to 400 m in length.
Check flooding :
- It is similar to ordinary flooding except that the water is controlled by surrounding the check area with low and flat levees.
- Levees are generally constructed along the contours, having vertical interval of about 5 to 10 cm.
- The confined plot area varies from 0.2 to 0.8 hectare
Furrow irrigation :
It is a type of surface irrigation in which trenches or furrows are dug between crop rows in a field.
Water flowing from furrows and if seeps vertically and horizontally to refill the soil reservoir.
The crops are usually grown on the ridges between the furrows. It is commonly used for row crops such as maize, cotton, potatoes, sugarbeat, tobacco etc.
