Oxidizing flame :If the ratio of
oxygen and acetylene is 1.5:1, then the produced flame is called oxidizing
flame. Oxidizing flame is not suitable for steel as it oxidizes steel. Such
flame is used in welding of copper and copper alloys (brass and bronze).

There are three basic flame types :
A. Neutral flame : Neutral flame is produced by the balanced ignition of oxygen and acetylene. In most cases, it has no chemical effect on the metal being welded due to which it is named neutral flame.
B. Oxidizing flame : It is hotter than a neutral flame and is often used on copper and zinc.
C. Carburizing flame : It has excess acetylene and less oxygen. Using carburizing flame with iron produces iron carbide, causing a chemical change in steel and iron. For this reason a carburizing flame is not used on metals that absorb carbon.
