Question
Read the below given statements carefully and identify the correct statements:
A. Generally grit particles lie between 0.1 to 1 mm in size.
B. Stokes law holds good for settling of particles of diameters less than 1 mm.
C. Usually the detention period of grit chambers is 60 min.
D. The loss of head in a grit chamber varies from 0.06 to 0.6 m.
A.
B and D
B.
A and D
C.
B and C
D.
A and C
Answer ( Option B)

A and D

Solution

1. The minimum size of grit to be removed is 0.2 mm but 0.15 mm is preferred in conditions where a considerable amount of ash is to be carried in sewage.
2. Stokes' law is valid for particle size between 0.002 mm to 0.2 mm. Stokes law states that the force resisting a spherical body in a viscous fluid is directly proportional to the velocity of the sphere, the radius of the sphere and the viscosity of the fluid.
3. Loss of head in a grit chamber varies from 0.06 to 0.6 m depending on the device adopted for velocity control.
