Question

Read the statements given below and choose the correct option:

I.  The water-cement ratio influences both the strength and durability of concrete.

II. Increasing water-cement ratio increases concrete strength.

A.
Both statements are correct
B.
Only Statement I is correct
C.
Only Statement II is correct
D.
Neither statement is correct
Answer ( Option B)

Only Statement I is correct

Solution

Statment I is correct because the water cement ratio is a crucial factor that influences

both the strength and

durability of concrete as strength of concrete primarily depends upon the strength of

cement paste and

strength of cement paste depends on dilution of paste (or) strength of paste increases

with cement content

and decreases with air and water content.

As per Duff Abrahm's Law: It is evident that strength of concrete depends only upon w/c ratio provided the mix is workable.

Stregnth at 28 days (S) = A/BX

Where

A = 98.4 N/mm2

B = 7

X= w/c ratio by volume
