Timbering : It is sometimes also known as ‘shoring’ consists of providing timber planks or boards and struts to give temporary support to the sides of the trench. 
Used when the depth of the trench is large or when the subsoil is loose, the sides of the trench may cave in.
Centering : It is a temporary framework for supporting a masonry arch during construction until it is able to stand by itself.
Shuttering / formwork : It is temporary support as a mould for fresh concrete, in which concrete is poured and cast in the desired shape and gain initial strength, hardened and matured or to support the sides of trenches, or similar.
Poling : It is the act of supporting or of propelling the falling sides of a trench by means of poles or poling boards.
