The bearing capacity of a rectangular footing of plan dimensions 1.5 m × 3 m resting on the surface of a sand deposit was estimated as 600 kN/m2 when the water table is far below the base of the footing. The bearing capacities in kN/m2 when the water level rises to depths of 3 m, 1.5 m and 0.5 m below the footing are:

Solution

The bearing capacity of sand deposit will remain same until water table rises to a depth less than width of footing i.e. 1.5m below footing.
When water table rises to 3m and 1.5m below footing, the bearing capacity remains same.
But when water table rises to 0.5m below footing bearing capacity would change. 
∴ Footing rests on surface of a sand deposit i.e.
Df = 0 (Because footing resting on the surface) and C = 0 (Because of sand deposit)
∴ qu and qnu both are equal because Df = 0
∴ When water table is far below the base of the footing, bearing capacity was estimated as       600 kN/m2
When water table rises to depth of 1.5 m below the footing then we can get same bearing capacity i.e. 600 kN/m2
∴ When water table rises to depth of 0.5 m below the footing then -
Dw = Depth of water table below the footing i.e. 0.5 m
Bf = Width of footing i.e. 1.5 m
