Metallic sheath provides protection to cable from moisture and other chemicals present in the environment or soil. It is usually made of Aluminium or lead. It also provides a path for fault and leakage currents as the sheath is earthed at one cables end. One function of sheath is to help bundle the conductors together if there are multiple wire inside cable.
