Question

The tension in the cable supporting a lift is more when the lift is ________ .

लिफ्ट को सहारा देने वाली केबल में तनाव तब अधिक होता है जब लिफ्ट ________ होती है।

A.

moving downwards with uniform velocity

B.

moving upwards with uniform velocity

C.

stationary

D.

moving upwards with acceleration.

Answer ( Option D)

moving upwards with acceleration.

Solution

Now, Tension in cable when the lift is stationary is given by,

Ts = W = mg

Tension in cable when the lift is moving downward is given by,

Td = mg - ma = m(g - a)

Similarly, tension in cable when the lift is moving upward is given by,

Tu = mg + ma = m(g + a)

Tension in cable when the lift is moving upward with uniform velocity (a = 0) is given by,

T uniform = mg + ma = mg

It is clear that, the tension in cable is maximum when the lift is moving upward with an acceleration.

Hence, the correct option is (D).
