Question

What is the velocity ratio for creep in the belt drive system for  be σ1 being the stress in tight side,  σ2  being the stress on slack side and E is the young’s modulus of elasticity of the belt material?

A.

B.

C.

D.

Answer ( Option C)

Solution

Creep : In a belt drive, the portion of the belt leaving the driven and entering the driver is known as the tight side and a portion of the belt leaving the driver and entering the is known as the slack side. The uneven expansion and contraction of the belt over the pulleys (expansion on a tight side and contraction on the slack side), produces a relative motion of the belt over the pulleys this phenomenon is known as creep in a belt. Velocity ratio (when considering creep) is given by,

Where,

Stress in the belt on the tight and slack side respectively

E = Young’s modulus for the material of belt

Hence, the correct option is (C)

&Key Points:-

The total effect of creep slightly reduces the speed of the driven pulley.Since the effect of creep is very small, therefore it is generally neglected.
