Domestic wastes produced by urban residences, institutions etc. is usually collected into pipes called sanitary sewers. In rural residences, it is collected in septic tanks. The septic tank is the oldest waste disposal process. Vermi-composting can be done through machinery recycling processes and it can reproduce some natural elements for an effective waste disposal process.

Composting pits include excreta released from toilets. Some organizations use on site human waste disposal technology to offer hygiene. They do not require scavenging, excreta from the toilet seats flow through covered drains into the biogas plant. Biogas plants use animal dung or human excreta to produce biogas which is used as a source of energy.

Chemical tanks have special chemicals in holding tanks so that they can reduce the odors of excreta. Human excreta collect into the holding tank. These toilets are usually self contained and movable. Size of chemical tanks is usually small so that it can be emptied frequently.
